The major difference between raw honey and commercial honey is the method of preparation where the former if filtered while, the latter is pasteurized.

Honey is a naturally made viscous sweetener from bees. It is a very versatile substance since it is widely known as an effective ingredient in several products like: moisturizer, bath soap, hair and scalp recipes, dental and mouth treatment. According to reallyrawhoney.com, honey in general is an effective treatment of various diseases like anemia, ulcers, dyspepsia, and more. The level of effectiveness varies according to the method of preparation namely the:

Filtration Method

Filtration is a process of removing impurities and other particles from a substance using a tool or equipment especially made for filtration instead of heating.

Pasteurization Method

To kill bacteria present in honey, a process called pasteurization is done. This involves heating of honey at a very high temperature to effectively kill botulinum toxin, which causes food poisoning. Another reason for heating honey is to prevent granulation that usually happens when honey is allowed to sit over a period of time.

Raw honey is pure and coarse while, commercial honey has been heated and processed. To have a clearer view about the difference between raw and commercial honey, the two classifications of honey are defined as follows:

Raw Honey

A concentrated nectar, which is pure and unprocessed. It is the most nutritious classification of honey and is effective in treating indigestion, nausea, anemia, malnutrition, ulcers, burns, cancer and gallbladder diseases. It has high levels of antioxidant and is also found to have expectorant, anti-allergic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties. Raw honey appears to be thicker in texture and contains particles like bee wings, pollens, honeycomb bits and enzymes.

Commercial Honey

This is a commercial type of honey found in the supermarket that has been filtered and heated. Since the process of heating destroys not just the bacteria, but some vitamins and minerals as well; the nutients it contain is much less compared to the raw honey. Although the nutritional value differs, it serves the same purpose as the raw honey. The texture is much consistent, transparent and liquid. Most of the commercially prepared honey comes in customized containers for a more appealing look.

Pure honey is not the same as raw honey. The difference does not only lies in the fact that raw honey is the honey that wasn’t altered at all in contrast to pure honey which may have been processed even though nothing was added. The nutritional benefits of both kinds also have dissimilarities as well with pure honey losing some of the nutritional value it used to have as a raw honey.

Is there really such a term as “pure raw honey“? Although pure honey and raw honey may seem like interchangeable words, the two are actually not the same.

Raw Honey

The concentrated nectar being collected by honey bees from flowers is the raw honey.  It is characterized by a fine arrangement of crystals and its appearance looks milkier. It also contains little bits of bee pollen, honey comb, bee wings, and propolis.

Difference of Pure from Raw

Pure honey, on the other hand, simply means that nothing has been added to it like glucose, sugar, molasses, starches, and syrups or other products that are similar. It consists only of nectar that honey bees gathered, concocted, and kept in their honey combs. It may have undergone the process of filtration, pasteurization and or heating so the term “raw honey” can no longer be used on it.

Nutritional Value of Both Kinds

Furthermore, pure honey does not contain the same amount of nutritional value as raw honey does. Raw honey, not only is an alkaline-forming food, which means that it counteracts acid indigestion in the digestive system, it also contains amylase.  Amylase is an enzyme that is abundant in flower pollens which helps in the predigestion of carbohydrates and activate the vitamins and minerals in the body system. But when honey undergoes processess like heating and/or filtration, its fine aromas, enzymes and yeast are destroyed. So, such a honey would not be as nutritive as raw honey.

Now that we know that there should not be a term as “pure raw honey“, we should find out if it is either pure or raw because of its nutritional differences. You may visit Organic Honey Benefits to know more about it.

Contains propolis, honeycomb and live enzymes

Review of Really Raw Honey

We use goldenrod and aster nectar and our cold packing process to produce our creamy, crystalline texture and rich, full-bodied flavor. This fall the Aster plant bloomed in abundance, and the bees foraged enthusiastically. Aster causes the honey to crystallize firm and smooth. If you would like to soften your honey, place the jar in warm water or leave in a warm room – this will not cause any loss of enzymes or other healthful properties in the honey!

This is a good honey, but may be a little too “raw” for some peoples tastes. There were no bee body parts in the jar that I could see, but just shy of that. The propelis cap is something to get through, thats for certain. Once you are through that, youll find some delicious, smooth honey. The wildflower taste was very nice as well.

This honey is the best honey I have ever tasted!! I eat it right off the spoon! After trying this honey its the only honey i will buy! I highly recommend it to ever honey lover out there!!!

Excellent product. It is pure and smooth. One of the best Ive tasted.

its a good quality raw honey; dont get me wrong. and i do love the fact that they have the propolis/beeswax/goodies on the surface. however… the honey itself is rather soft and its not organic. whats the point, you may ask? if youre going to dish out some cash, why get honey that has genetically modified substances in it?

best bet: the ys organic raw honey. the texture is far better (taste it and youll agree) and its organic for peace of mind. you dont get the propolis layer, though, but having had both, get the ys brand.

for honey aficionados, try the organic white hawaiian honey if you can find it. ultra pricey, but it has a unique minty, cool tone without the minty bite to it. interesting stuff.

This honey is great, it is basically the purest form of honey you can get your hands on without owning your own bee farm. It is, however, pricer than regular honeys. And, unlike most honey, it not only is raw but totally unstrained. That means theres a crispy/crunchy brown crust when you first crack open the jar. This is all natural bee byproducts (pollen, propolis, honeycomb and live enzymes). Its not nice looking, nor does it smell great. In fact, in my first jar of this stuff I found a bee wing in this crust. You must break this layer with a knife or fork to get to the actual honey. But that makes it all worth it! The honey itself is wonderful, its sweet but also strongly tastes like flowers. Its not as runny as the squeeze bottle honey, but nor is it as thick as the creamed honey that comes in small tubs. And when you consider that this stuff is raw, with all the potent health benefits of honey still intact, and that honey never expires, then paying that extra money isnt such a bad deal. Honey is good at soothing coughs and sore throats, and it can also be used as a mask on the face for a moisturizing and anti-bacterial remedy. So why not use the purest stuff you can find? I sure do.

Stakich RAW HONEY 5-LB

Here’s a review about Stakich Raw Honey. Check this out. Price is at $21.60.

Customer Review

Stakich RAW HONEY 5-LBI tried this product for the first time off Amazon, and must say that before, I have always used the Really Raw Honey. Well, I hate that kind because it has all the ” Crown” on top which can be parts of bees like wings, etc.. GROSS! So, I always scrap it off and trash it. But then I tried this one and it has a wonderful flavor and no “crown” it even has a more floral flavor. A wonderful product!

Great Lakes Select Honey, 32-Ounce Plastic Flat (Pack of 3)

Customer Review

Excellent taste to the Great Lakes Honey. I use this in place of sugar in lots of my recipes–salad dressings, breads making, sauces, honey butter, and many more. It is good plain on toast or mixed with peanut butter. We have used it on pancakes mixed with a little maple syrup. Possibilites are endless. I would buy this product again from Amazon not only because it was excellent but the price was too.

Honey Tree Organic Rainforest Honey, 16-Ounce Plastic Flat

Customer Review

Rainforest Honey is a great idea!
Honey production is good for the rainforest. This kind of low-impact use is something that we need to support! I use this honey for sweetening almost anything that I used to sweeten with sugar. For a 6 pack of Organic Honey this is a deal! I paid $8 for one bottle of organic honey the last time that I bought it.

Organic; fresh, neutral flavor perfect for all sweetening uses

EEasy to use; dissolves readily even in cold drinks; no refrigeration necessary

Mild I only use the light color. I was using Madhava 17 oz Raw Agave (light), but it isnt currently available. Hopefully, theyll bring back the light organic raw agave.

This is a great sugar substitute. It is much better than all the artificial sweeteners on the market. It tastes just like a liquid sugar, but has a low glycemic rating. The price on Amazon is great; you would pay $4.99/bottle in the grocery store and here it works out to be $2.??/bottle. Great deal.

What is the point of a nozzle that cant be used? Only by opening the entire top can the syrup flow, which produces a sticky residue and doesnt pour to well. How can you open this??
